Hampton Court Palace |
Leg Distance: 7 miles
Number of Locks: 2
Time Taken: Part of a day
We took the train to Walton station and then walked a mile and a half to Walton Bridge where it is easy to access the river. There is also a burger/breakfast van there in case an energy boost is needed!
This stretch took us past the entrance to Shepperton Marina (where we bought our canoe) plus lots of houses with gardens backing onto the river. On the right hand side before reaching Molesey Lock is the site of the former Hurst Park Racecourse, followed almost immediately by East Molesey Cricket Club and Molesey Boat Club
A possible stop on this leg is Henry VIII's Tudor palace at Hampton Court. It is on the left hand side just after Hampton Court Bridge, although the only place to leave a canoe is probably at The Mitre Hotel just before the bridge as there doesn't seem anywhere else obvious to leave a canoe safely unattended
There are quite a few pubs along this leg, many of which have a jetty/landing
area, including:
The Weir (Walton)
The Phoenix (Sunbury)
The Mitre Hotel (Hampton Court)
The Albany (Thames Ditton)
Ye Olde Swan (Thames Ditton)
Closer to Kingston we passed close to Raven's Ait island, opposite which is the car park that we used as our canoe launch site on many occasions
If you would like to download detailed information on the river please see this blog entry
